Perception of Geminates in Finnish and Polish
نویسندگان
چکیده
Finnish and Polish subjects judged four series of two-syllable stimuli varying in intervocalic consonant duration as short (singleton) or long (geminate). The four series differed in the durations of the flanking vowels. As predicted, perception shifted toward geminates for Finnish subjects when V1 was lengthened, especially when V2 was also shortened, to match normal Finnish production. The shift also occurred for Finnish subjects when V1:V2 ratio was kept constant. Any effect of lengthened stimuli on perceived tempo, expected to produce a geminate boundary shift in the opposite direction, was smaller than the V1-effect. We also hypothesised that Polish subjects would show a similar pattern in perception, given that, like Finnish, Polish has slightly longer vowels before geminates. Polish listeners did present a clear sensitivity to flanking vowel durations but the observed shifts in geminate boundaries for the four stimulus series were almost exactly reversed compared to the Finnish subjects.

Spectral continuity, amplitude changes, and perception of length contrasts
Japanese deploys a singleton-geminate contrast in obstruents and nasals, but not in glides. Even though Japanese allows lexical nasal geminates, patterns of emphatic gemination show that Japanese avoids creating nasal geminates. Japanese therefore disfavors sonorant geminates in general, and glide geminates in particular. These phonological patterns of geminates are actually found in other lang...
متن کاملDevelopment of perception of second language Japanese geminates: Role of duration, sonority, and segmentation strategy
This study explored the second language perceptual accuracy of Japanese geminates (moraic units) by English-speaking learners at three proficiency levels: beginner (28), low–intermediate (42), and advanced (15). Stimuli included singleton and geminate /t/, /k/, /s/ followed by /a/ or /u/ produced by a native speaker in isolated words and carrier sentences. Results of a forced-choice identificat...
متن کاملGemination at the junction of phonetics and phonology
Tashlhiyt Berber has contrastive singleton and lexical geminate consonants in all positions. In addition, it has two types of phonologically derived geminates: concatenated and assimilated ones. Within CV phonology, geminates, including post-lexical ones, are represented as single melodic units associated to two prosodic positions. This study examines the way these abstract autosegmental repres...
متن کاملItalian geminates under speech rate and focalization changes: kinematic, acoustic, and perception data
Italian geminate consonants have been studied as for both their phonetic characteristics and their phonological status. As for the phonetic aspects, though, few works focus on kinematic data. This study relates on both acoustic and kinematic material, as well as on perception data, in order to get evidence on the phonological status of geminate consonants. A read speech corpus was collected and...

Previous studies have documented that speakers of French, a language with predictable stress, have difficulty distinguishing nonsense words that vary in stress position solely (stress ‘‘deafness’’). In a sequence recall task with adult speakers of five languages with predictable stress (Standard French, Southeastern French, Finnish, Hungarian and Polish) and one language with non-predictable st...
